Galley Kitchen Layout
The galley kitchen layout is crucial when you have a small space for your kitchen. It is especially well suited to rectangular areas. With a galley kitchen layout it is important to maximize your use of space so that everything is convenient and there is space for everything. The galley kitchen layout consists of two rows of counters with an aisle in between. In order not to feel too closed in, it is nice if one wall on the galley kitchen layout can be a half wall so you can still look out into the wider living space.
Another option for your galley kitchen layout that serves the same purpose is if you use a multiple level center island with upper cabinets above it to form one wall. That way the upper level of the center island can be used as a bar when entertaining, and the lower level can be used for kitchen prep. It is even better if your center island has drawers and cabinets underneath the counter top so that you have more storage. If possible, your galley kitchen layout should have the sink either beneath a window or an opening in the wall. The sink is part of the kitchen work triangle which any galley kitchen layout should try to keep in place. This work triangle is formed by the sink, stove, and refrigerator. A good layout will have these work horses of the kitchen in a triangle with two on one side of the aisle and the other about equidistant between them on the other side of the aisle. To make the galley kitchen layout more user friendly you should also try to consolidate the counter space near the appliances that you use the most. While you are planning your galley kitchen layout, be sure to offset your appliances so that you don't have to worry about appliance doors opening into each other across the center aisle. This is especially important if your galley kitchen layout includes a center aisle on the narrow side. This center aisle should be at least four feet wide. Six feet is even better if you have that option for your galley kitchen layout, as this will help prevent traffic congestion if more than one person is in the kitchen at the same time. One important thing not to forget when planning your galley kitchen layout is the lighting. You want to make sure to include adequate lighting, so consider having a window and/or a skylight to brighten up the space.
